What Does ChatGPT Actually Do With Your Data?
It stores your conversations, may have humans review a sample of them, and on the free tier can use them to train future models unless you opt out. None of that is hidden, but almost nobody reads the settings. Here is the plain version, and how to lock it down in two minutes.
By default, ChatGPT stores your conversations, may let human reviewers read a sample of them, and on the free and Plus tiers can use them to train future models unless you opt out. It also keeps your account details and a rough sense of your location. None of this is a secret. It is written in the settings and the privacy policy. The problem is that the protective options are off by default and buried where almost nobody looks. Here is the plain version, and the two-minute fix.
What gets collected
When you use ChatGPT, a few different things are being kept.
- Your conversations. Everything you type and everything it replies is saved to your history and stored on the company's servers.
- Your account information. Email, and usually a rough location derived from your connection, plus device and usage data.
- Feedback signals. When you thumbs-up or thumbs-down a reply, that is recorded against the conversation.
This is normal for a cloud service. The part people miss is what happens to the conversations after they are stored.
What happens to your conversations
Three things, and the defaults are not in your favor on a personal account.
- They are retained. Your chats stick around. Deleting a conversation in the app starts a removal process, but it does not instantly erase every copy from every backup.
- Some are reviewed by people. Like most AI companies, the makers of ChatGPT can have staff review samples of conversations to check quality and catch abuse. You cannot see or choose which of yours might be reviewed.
- They can train future models. On the free and Plus tiers, your conversations are eligible to be used to improve future versions unless you turn that off. Business tiers like Team, Enterprise, and the API do not train on your content by default.
That last distinction matters a lot. If you have only ever used a free or Plus account and never touched the settings, the safe assumption is that your chats have been eligible for training.
The two-minute lockdown
If you use ChatGPT on a personal account, do these now.
- Turn off training. Open Settings, go to Data Controls, and switch off the option that allows your content to be used to improve the model. This stops future conversations from feeding training.
- Use temporary chats for sensitive topics. A temporary chat is not saved to your history and is not used for training. Reach for it whenever the subject is personal.
- Clear your history. Delete old conversations you would not want retained. It is not instant everywhere, but it removes them from your account and the active systems.
- Consider a paid business tier if you handle anything sensitive regularly, since those do not train on your content by default.
Two minutes of settings changes puts you in a dramatically better position than the default.
The limit of settings
Here is the catch, and it is the reason settings alone are not the whole answer. A toggle only governs behavior going forward, on the one service where you set it. It does nothing about the message you already sent last month. It does not follow you to the next AI tool you try. And it relies on you remembering to get every option right on every account, forever, which no real person actually does.
There is also a simpler truth underneath all of it: the safest data is the data you never sent. If your password, your card number, or your home address never leaves your device, no setting matters, because there is nothing stored to protect, review, or train on.
The takeaway
ChatGPT is not doing anything sinister with your data. It is doing the ordinary thing cloud AI services do: storing, sometimes reviewing, and by default on consumer tiers, training. Spend two minutes turning off training and using temporary chats for anything personal. And for the handful of things that should never leave your device at all, the reliable protection is not a setting you hope you remembered, it is a layer that catches them automatically before they are ever sent.
